Questions To Consider:
- Jesus commends the Ephesian church for its hard work, perseverance, and discernment. Why is it important to receive that commendation fully before considering his criticism?
- Paul warned the Ephesian elders that “savage wolves” would arise and distort the truth. Years later, Jesus says they successfully tested false apostles. How might a necessary commitment to truth gradually become suspicion, harshness, or lovelessness?
- What do you think Jesus means by “the love you had at first”? How are love for Jesus, love for fellow believers, and love for our neighbours connected?
- Jesus warns that he may remove their lampstand. What does this reveal about the purpose of a church? How can a congregation remain institutionally active while losing its witness to Jesus?
- Jesus gives Ephesus a way home: remember, repent, and return. What might each of those movements look like practically in your life? Is there a specific “first work” of love Jesus may be asking you to resume?
- Jesus promises access to the tree of life. How does this promise change the tone of his warning? What does it reveal about what Jesus ultimately desires for his church?
