Revelation 2:8-11

Questions To Consider:

  1. Jesus introduces himself as “the First and the Last, who died and came to life again.” Why is this the particular vision of Jesus that a suffering church needs?
  2. Jesus says, “I know your afflictions.” What difference does it make to believe that Jesus sees and understands our suffering, even when he does not immediately remove it?
  3. Smyrna appears poor and powerless, but Jesus says, “You are rich.” What do they possess that suffering, economic loss, imprisonment, and death cannot take away? What false measurements of blessing or spiritual health does this challenge?
  4. Why is it important to distinguish suffering for faithfulness to Jesus from ordinary hardship—or from consequences caused by our own unwise or unloving behaviour?
  5. Jesus says, “Do not be afraid” while openly acknowledging that more suffering is coming. How is this different from promising that nothing painful will happen? What does courage look like when fear is still present?
  6. What might “be faithful” look like in your daily life right now?
  7. Jesus promises the crown of life and says the second death will not harm those who overcome. How does resurrection hope help us endure without minimizing the reality of present pain?
